c000135 Program can’t start %hs is missing from your computer – Windows 7

The Problem

Ok just a quick update regarding a problem I had today with AVG. The automatic AVG update completed and then begun to pester me about rebooting. When I finally rebooted my computer which is running Windows 7 ultimate it just switched of right before the Windows login screen. After attempting the Windows Startup repair with no luck I attempted to enter safemode, from their I could see the OS stalling at AVGIDSEH.sys meaning the next .sys file can not be loaded.

The solution

Use a linux live CD or flash drive to gain access to your Windows partition and rename the AVG directory inside of your Program Files / Program Files(x86) folder. You should then be able to boot into Windows and remove AVG. Don't forget to install another antivirus program, I personally decided to go with Mcaffee after reading a few good reviews.

If you don't have a Linux bootable media to hand then you can download a copy of Ubuntu free from http://www.ubuntu.com, they also have a very handly tool for installing it to a flash drive. If you don't want to go the Linux path then I belive AVG have live CD that you can use for the same purpose or you final option would be to remove the hardrive and put it in another working computer to rename the folder.

I personally found it difficult to find any good information about this on the internet and while I don't purposly try to put keywords in my articles I have listed a few search terms that I tried before eventually resolivng my problem. Hopefully this will help people solve this issue a little quicker.

  • Windows 7 BSOD before login screen
  • Windows 7 hanging at AVGIDSEH.sys
  • AVG update caused Windows 7 to BSOD
  • Manually remove AVG from Linux
  • Uninstalling AVG from Linux CD

If you are just generally trying to trouble shoot a Windows BSOD and you don't have any system restore points or a system image to recover from and the Window startup repair didn't work for you then your next port of call should be to press f8 on boot up and select the option along the lines of Start windows without automatic restart on failure. This should allow you to view the error code / message.

If anyone else has had a similar issue but encountered differernt error messages then please comment below.
